Microbiome in Mind
Jane Dudley

My name is Jane Dudley, and I am the first person in the world to achieve full remission from treatment-resistant Bipolar I Disorder using Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT). My case study was the first such report published in the scientific literature.
Since my complete recovery from all bipolar symptoms in 2017, I’ve been a passionate advocate for advancing research into FMT. I’ve dedicated myself to raising awareness and calling for funding for rigorous, randomised controlled trials to determine whether FMT is a safe and effective treatment for bipolar disorder in a clinical setting — with the ultimate goal of making this therapy widely accessible and affordable for those in need.
I have worked for several years as a Lived Experience Advisor with the Food & Mood Centre at Deakin University, global leaders in Nutritional Psychiatry, contributing to a range of clinical trials. During this time, I’ve watched with dismay as the team has repeatedly struggled to secure funding for a world-first randomised controlled trial investigating the use of FMT to treat Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
Although funding for a full RCT trial has not yet been secured, Dr Jessica Green of the Food & Mood Centre, motivated by my FMT recovery story, successfully completed a world-first feasibility pilot clinical trial using FMT to treat MDD in 2022.
In March 2025 Professor Gordon Parker AO - widely recognised as one of Australia’s most influential and accomplished psychiatrists, particularly in the field of mood disorders, published a groundbreaking book on my FMT success story titled "A Gut Mood Solution".
On the 28th of July my story was featured in an episode of Australian Story titled "Gut Instinct". Watch the full episode on Youtube below. Here is a link to the accompanying ABC News article:

I’ve been interviewed for several podcasts, news stories, and articles. By continuing to share my story across increasingly wider platforms, I hope to help build the momentum needed to finally secure funding for the desperately needed clinical trials.
